An artist whose rise coincided with the Pictures Generation, for decades Rex Robinson has created paintings that pair kitschy cartoons from greeting cards or popular images of celebrities and internet memes with blank fields of color. “If you take away the layer of representation you have an abstract painting behind it,” she said. “I realized that that’s what my work boiled down to: I’m trying to turn representation into abstraction, to turn the representational image inside out.” Here, the face and torso of a young dancer in a tutu is censored by a grey rectangle, turning the texture and colors of her costume into abstraction.
